I'm about 70% through this one, and as much as it hurts to say, I'm almost ready to leave it and stop it (almost feel like it's not worth finishing).
I remember THE DEAD (first one) was half decent at best, with some minor issues (which one would expect from a low budget movie).
THE DEAD 2;
. suspense isn't suspenseful most of the time (you can pretty much count down from 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 as to when the main characters are gonna escape).
. Acting isn't good. When I watch a movie, I know the acting is good when I actually get lost in the movie (or TV show). When my peripheral vision turns off and the movie has my undivided attention, and I'm excited to watch more and I feel for the characters and I want to be IN the movie with them. THE DEAD 2 isn't delivering that at all. The acting is 5/10 at best. Lots of unbelievable things (meaning, I don't believe what I'm looking at. The scenarios between characters doesn't work for me). I found myself daydreaming at times while watching this one, OR I'd suddenly remember something I had to do, and didn't feel bad about pausing the movie (or letting it play in the background for a minute or two).
. Story is semi-acceptable, but at the same time...very very drawn out! We basically have this american guy who builds and repairs and maintains wind turbines in India. We find our early in the movie he is involved in a relationship with a young woman who is set to be a dowry for another man. Something happens in the relationship and the father finds out and forbids the two (the american and his daughter) from seeing each other. The father and daughter are hiding in their house looking through the window at all the violence happening outside while the mother is very ill, in bed, (with what I'm guessing is a zombie bite, but I didn't catch if it was or not earlier on). American dude is trying to get back to her, though he's at least a couple day away. He meets up with an 8-10 year old kid who is rather mature for his age. The kid almost gets the main character killed a number of times, but, he's gotta be the hero/good guy, so he keeps the kid around. I'm predicting, in the end, the dude gets to his indian girlfriend as the dad is being eaten by the wife after she turns...but I have no idea at the moment.
. The zombies are 5.5/10. They're kinda lame in that they move very sluggishly. They're almost like traditional "night of the living dead" zombies. Each step takes 3 seconds. Though, despite contact lenses to remove the eye colour (only the pupil is visible), their only other zombie characteristic is their rather tall stance (walking up right as though they were nailed to a long plank of wood), and there's very little blood or bite mark. For the most part, it's kinda hard to tell how each zombie got bit 'cause there is a lot left of them (as in, it's not like half their face it chewed off, or their arm or stomach etc). The special effects and make up isn't very good. They aren't RAGERS like in 28 days later, and they're not runners/speed walkers like in resident evil or the walking dead. As a matter of fact, they are very slow. Very ...very slow! It takes them a long time to gather anything which would be considered a major threat. They don't attack very fast or aggressive. In fact, while i watch anyone get over come by any zombies, I think to myself, 'it was your own #!$? fault....you had plenty of time! The main character uses guns and hits arms and stuff. He doesn't have a Rick Grimes aim, getting them in the head every single time. There are plenty of opportunities for close range melee attacks (crow bar, plank of wood etc), as long as you were reasonably fast enough, you could take out a good size group with minimal effort. There are some neat camera shots from high up showing lots of zombies in the distance, but again, with a good crowbar, or baseball bat, they'd be rather easy to clean up. The zombies for the most part aren't believable enough for me.
. A little more talk about the suspense, or "action". The action is fairly minimal. There are short action scenes, not a lot of gore, it's actually not scary at all. One scene, the main character is trying to turn on a motorcycle to escape and there are about 12-20 zombies around (maybe not that many), and he ONLY seems to want to kill any that get within arms reach of him (while the camera is bouncing all over the place trying to add suspense). He could have taken a couple minutes with his crow bar and thwacked each one down very easily and got away without stress or pressure etc. Scenes like this happen in repetition. There is regular chat about the danger they're in. They may find a place to hide and rest, and somehow the zombies are looking through the little peep holes in the wood doors/windows and see the characters inside...but they don't seen to get agitated about eating anyone unless the door is open. They'll all just hang outside and collect, until the door is open, then they flood in.
...more notes to come as I slowly finish this one.
