opening scene really confused me. I thought I downloaded a previous episode (or someone posted episode 16, but it was really a previous episode). But, I quickly learned it was just RICK reminiscing about the good ol' days.
We start off with Rick, Michonne and Carl. They're surviving in the woods. They check a rabbit trap (caught a small one), and then hear someone screaming for help. My first question is, WHO is this guy, and WHERE did he come from? it doesn't make sense. And when we see him, he's surrounded by walkers, and getting eaten alive. Why was his scream SO LOUD at first? If he was being chased long enough, wouldn't his screams have been far more faint and get louder and louder?
The three nearly miss being seen by this group of walkers, but a couple see them and they run away. They find themselves at the rail road where a few more walkers are eating som'n, and RICK has a flash back of gardening.
Personally, I felt the flashbacks were rather disruptive of the main episode. I didn't really understand what it had to do with this episode at all. If they were about RICK thinking back to the good old days, why is he thinking about it when he's crushing zombie skull? When the three (Rick, Michonne and Carl) find a car on the side of the road to sleep in, it makes sense that Rick would flash back then, but not while killing the dead. That was weird to me.
THEN, the show pretty much pulls straight from the comic in this part. Before I go on, I must confess, I looked online for TERMINUS theories out there. most people had the same theory. One person even went as far as to reference ISSUE 57 when Carl nearly gets raped by an old guy. I couldn't remember that, so I go back and check it out, and sure enough, some of the cannibal's attack the group at night and try to rape carl (sick and demented). But, Rick bites the one dude's neck (taking a chunk), while Abe shoots the other guy. The last guy starts to run away, but Rick chases him down, "he's mine". This whole scene is pretty much exactly re-created in this next scene.
Michonne, Carl and Rick are in a car for the night, and Daryl's 'scavenger' group get the jump on him. I got sucked in completely in this scene. I had no idea how RICK was going to get out of this mess. Daryl provides the perfect distraction. I'm sure most viewers were asking which side Daryl was going to stand on. I wasn't surprised he stayed TEAM RICK.
The only thing I didn't agree with about this scene, is when Rick bites (Joe?), the rest of the his guys stand there clueless and get taken out very easily. Even with Daryl having been beaten to crap, he still gets up in traditional 80's WWF fight style, like he isn't in any pain at all, and kills his attackers. Rick isn't at full strength by any means, and while Michonne is capable, dang, she's a good shot with a gun, and Daryl just got his ass beat.
EDITING NOTE; If you look carefully when the one dude holding carl says, "I'll kill him" and Michonne is holding the gun to him. You can clearly see the knife held to carl, using his RIGHT HAND. Then, the camera snaps to the front view, and the dude is holding the knife in his LEFT HAND.
BUT...they still clean up. Then they make their way to terminus, and climb a fence, get in through the back door (Rick, I didn't think you were the back door kinda guy). It's so weird that there's no one outside.
They finally get inside and find far less people than I expected. They seem very hospitable and welcome them with open arms. (did anyone notice that MICHONNE was the only one who didn't get a pat down?). AND THE TOUR BEGINS!
We first find ourselves with Mary (in the outside cafeteria) where Glenn and CO meet Mary. The way the tour guide talks about terminus is very strange. Daryl asks how long this place has been around. Mr. Tour guide says, "almost since the start". When camps got taken over, people merged in with terminus. I kept asking myself, 'where are these people?"
Then things go berserk when RICK notices a few things out of place (some of these residents are wearing some familiar apparel. Rick interrogates a guy about a stop watch (looking strangely like GLENNS). Then, a gun fire sparks, and there are suddenly a bunch of guns on the roofs shooting at their feet, leading them somewhere. They finally hit a dead end and are forced to get into a storage crate where they find GLENN and CO.
I loved RICK's final words, "They screwed with the wrong people!"
While an awesome final line, I feel like there should have been more.
It's obvious where Season 5 is going to go.
Initially, I would give this episode 7.5/10.
goods; we finally got an answer about what Terminus is, but now there are even more questions (many internet rumors are highly likely), considering what we saw in the backgrounds while Rick and CO were being chased by gun fire (wow, those guys have a lot of bullets). We got reunited with most of the party (where's beth? Where's tyreese + carol?). Little bit of zombie action (not enough though). Many parts of this scene followed the comic 57 well.
bads: We didn't get enough of an answer about Terminus (though for those of us who enjoy the tease...it'll give it som'n to look forward to. Some minor bad/inconsistent editing. The ending of the episode seemed too short. Episode ended on one of those cliff hangers, but also left you questioning if that was actually the end of the episode. It felt too abrupt. Too quick. For that reason, i'm deducting .5
NINA'S FINAL SCORE FOR THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 5 EPISODE 16; 7/10
Good to get some answers finally, good action. Not quite enough closure/information on Terminus or what's going to happen. While I noticed in the background during the gun chase scene, there were lots of letters on the walls (organizing the people like cattle I'm guessing). Rick and CO (and GLENN and co) were put in storange container "A". IF they are cannibals, I would have liked to heard an ending dialog from the terminus people regarding their proposed fate for the group.
