Saw this tonight-I thought it was brilliant.Best film I have watched in a good long while and dare I say better than the Evil Dead remake?! Cinematography was brilliant, soundtrack very creepy/80's slasher film like that set the atmosphere well and Elijah Wood was perfect as the psychopathic Frank. Its a French directed film and in my opinion they do films alot better than Hollywood. The gore is fucking horrible too (scalping or Achilles tendon slicing anyone?) Like horror?Do yourself a favour and check this out now-10/10!

aawwe...you are like a day or two ahead of me. I just downloaded this last week and was gearing up to watch it in a day or two. Guess I'll post my feedback after watching this one. OK...FINALLY WATCHED IT! MANIAC
well well, FRODO BAGGINS is all grown up. I've seen him in a couple movies in the last decade since Lord Of The Rings. Those movies kinda sucked in comparison to L.O.T.R. And here we have Maniac. I guess the name of the movie suggests what the movie is about, but this one really takes the cake. This movie is mostly "first person" perspective (well done on the camera work with this!). It's not rough like cloverfield (great movie, but rought camera work). This one is smooth, even uses mirrors etc.
The movie begins with Frodo, I mean Elija, I mean Frank following some girl home. I'm not going to spoil what happens to her...but it made my jaw drop. Hostile (first one) had that supreme creep factor in the beginning by showing (with the intro credits), some dude cleaning up after someone was killed. Taking cash, burning photos + clothes, and washing up the blood. It was SO creepy, and awesome. It's hard to top intro's like that in the horror genre. Maniac follows Frank, who is apparently skitzo (multiple personalities), and takes medication for his mental instability. One personality seems to want what most people want; companionship. But it seems when an opportunity presents itself (even if that opportunity is a one night stand), it doesn't end so well. Frank meets a girl through a dating site or som'n, and while the date seems to go VERY well...it doesn't end very well. Frank creates a mannequin out of his date and brings her home and has a freak out (very weird and awesome). It's very easy to see Frank is very disturbed! This movie has an almost none stop creepy vibe, which is pretty friggin' awesome. The music of the film feels very 80's. Kinda cheezy, but somehow it works with this movie. One neat scene shows Frodo (I mean Frank), driving slowly through the streets looking at various women and following them around until he seems to find the 'right one'. There's another scene where Frank hides in a locker watching a girl get dressed (or undressed) through the slits in the locker. My gosh, this movie gets creepier and creepier. He follows her downtown and through the subway. Frank...just so you know, staring at a woman is creepy and they don't like it! Woman gets off the subway hoping to avoid Frank (bad idea, she should have stayed on the subway where there are people! Instead, she runs through the empty subway being chased by Frank. This is the mind of a killer. Drive fear into the subject. The woman gets 'stuck' in a parking lot which is surrounded by a 6 foot tall fense and she wanders the parking lot wondering how to get out and panicking. K..chick. If you're fearing for your life...you climb the damn fense! Frank does the typical killer move, hides somwhere until she's close by and welll...takes out one leg...then the rest of her. Pretty rough scene for sure. Frank is definitley sick! He has a habbit of cutting of the woman's hair + scalp after killing them. Some scalps we see him cut off and some we don't. Frank meets up with a woman named Anna who is a photographer and after a couple meetings, he has an unofficial date. Frank restores Mannequins, and allows Anna to take pictures of him working. The two go to lunch in a park after Anna shows Frank the pictures she took. Frank then gets a heavy migrane (the migranes he gets which seem to trigger his hunger to kill). He gets out quick, leaving Anna in the park. We then get one of the weirdest scenes in the movie (prolly the first fully weird scene). It looks like Frank involved in a threesome with his mom and someone else. Possibly an explanation as to why he's so messed up (if he was sexual with his cocaine addicted mother and father). Another scene shows Anna at the movies with Frank. Frank is caught staring at Anna (she asks him to stop with a little laugh and tells him he's missing the movie). He begins to have a migrane with voices in his head and almost freaks out. Once again Anna finds herself asking if he's ok. In my opinion, there are a few warning signs Anna hasn't picked up on (maybe she's just too trusting), but she should have seen some of these unusual signs and started backing off a lil until she got a stronger understanding of what he's dealing with. We then get another scene which is another piece of the puzzle as to why Frank is so messed up. We find Frank on the city street watching his mom getting it on with some dude. I'm guessing she's a prostitute or if not..she's trading sex for drugs or som'n like that. In any event...she's not the best role model. And then we have the "challenge accepted" scene. Frank finds himself at the art show (Anna's art show) where he meets what appears to be Anna'a boyfriend. Frank meets up with big black boyfriend in the bathroom. There is a very small (and rather harmless) confrontation where Mr. boyfriend initiates the "come at me bro" territorial deal essentially telling Frank to back off Anna. It was harmless, all in all...but it wouldn't surprise me if Frank kills him. frank then follows another girl home (Anna's agent), at some pretty lavish looking apartment (following her after the art show). He steals the security guards keys and gets entry to her apartment (how he found the right key on the large collection of keys on the ring makes no sense though). And now the movie has turned into HOSTILE...where we wonder WHEN and HOW he'll kill her. He watches her bathe with a warm cloth over her eyes, standing just by her side, sitting at the edge of the bath (very evry creepy Frodo!!). And then..he starts playing with the bath bubbles which gets her attention, and then we get the "money shot" as to how he kills her. It wasn't as creepy as the parking lot scene. That was a damn creepy scene! This one seems to go into two phases. The bathroom, then he ties her up on a bed and stuffs cloth in her mouth. And in the next few moments...wow! He really does a number on her! Frank calls Anna, Anna tells him someone killed her agent. Frank goes to Anna's place and things start to go fairly well, but then get sour very fast. It's to bad...I liked Anna. Frank takes unconcious Anna for a lil drive and get even more sour! And in the final scene...things get down right friggin' insane! Fabulous ending! Technical closure. My only compaint about the story progress is, considering his age...we see him kill (4 girls?) within a very short time. There must have been at least 1 other girl before the first girl he followed home at the beginning. If not, it makes me wonder what was he doing with his urges to kill before that first girl? Seems this movie spans maybe a month or so. That's just about 1 girl a week he kills. Seems like a very busy serial killer. What was he doing before this time? I found a series called MOST EVIL (google/youtube it). Most serial killer they discuss in that series (obviously focusin on killers who have been caught, and their stories told). Most of them killed once and didn't kill again for several years later. While others killed a few times a year. That being said...Frank was a very busy guy for a very short time. Great movie over all. A little bit unexplained in the story (a lil too much left to imagination/interpretation). But all in all, it's a great movie through the perspective of a killer! Nina gives Maniac 9.5/10

Me and my wife caught this on Netflix a few weeks back. Thought it was fantastic. Not too many good modern horror movies these days. I've seen people complain about "Wood's" performance in it, but thought he did a good job with Frank. I honestly enjoyed this a bit more than the original.
